Local attractions close to Nikolai Residence Hotel Berlin
Alexanderplatz is one of the most visited places in Europe. Named after the Russian Tsar Alexander I. We Berliners call it “Alex”. Towering above the place of 386-meter-high television tower, the tallest building in the city. The TV Tower offers good orientation for the way to the hotel Nikolai Residence. The observation deck and the restaurant can be reached by elevator.
Rotes Rathaus / Red City Hall
Located between Alexanderplatz and the Nikolai Quarter is the Rotes Rathaus, which received its name from the red bricks . The Red City Hall is the seat of the Berlin Senate and the Governing Mayor. At the building you will find boards with pictures of the history of Berlin.
A nice walk and a few minutes along the Spree from Nikolai Quarter is the Hackescher Markt. The Hackeschen Höfe are Germany’s largest enclosed courtyard area.
You will find many cafes, bars, cinema, Varieté, small design shops and boutiques. From Hackescher Markt, we recommend a trip through the former barn area, between Rosenthaler Straße, Münzstraße and Torstraße and continue to Oranienburger Strasse around the New Synagogue. Unter den Linden
The boulevard Unter den Linden is just a 5 minutes’ walk from Nikolai Residence Hotel. You are right in the center of Berlin. Along the boulevard are the Museum Island, Berlin Cathedral, State Opera and leads to the Pariser Platz and the Brandenburg Gate. A nice walk.
Berliner Dom / Berlin Cathedral
The Berliner Dom is an imposing building and the largest church in Berlin. The view from the dome deal shows the great location of the Berlin Cathedral. From the top you overlook the Museum Island, the Synagogue, the Gendarmenmarkt, the Reichstag and the Red City Hall. Beside the church services great concerts and events take place.
Museumsinsel / Museum Island

The Friedrichstrasse crosses boulevard the Unter den Linden just a couple minutes before you come to the Brandenburg Gate. A busy street with many business offices, shops and designer boutiques. The Dussmann is interesting for lovers of books and music. In the northern part of the Friedrichstraße is the famous cabaret the “Distel” and the Admiralspalast, a beautiful venue for shows, musicals and concerts. The famous revue theater Friedrichstadt Palace is just behind the beautiful bridge over the Spree.
The Galeries Lafayette department store is located in the southern part of the Friedrichstrasse on subway station “Französische Straße”. Here you will find famous designer labels, cosmetics and in the basement delicious French cuisine.
Just behind the Galleries Lafayette towards the Nikolai Quarter and the Hotel Nicolai Residence is the famous Gendarmenmarkt. A beautiful and exclusive place. The center of the square forms the Konzerthaus Berlin flanked by the French Dom and German Dom. For a insight view of beautiful Konzerthaus, we recommend to attend a guided tour or a concert. Either you walk along the road “Französische Strasse” passing the German Foreign Office and the “new” Berlin Palace back to the hotel. If you still feel fit stroll along Friedrichstrasse to Checkpoint Charlie. Our tip: short stop for a chocolate at Fassbender & Rausch at the Gendarmenmarkt / corner of Charlottenstrasse.
The Checkpoint Charlie is the most famous former border crossing between East and West Berlin and thus between the two German states. On the history and attempts to escape the border crossing remembers the Wall Museum. You should stop for a visit.
Walk along the road Zimmerstrasse towards Potsdamer Platz. The Dokumentationszentrum Topography of Terror, shows the terrible events in German history of the Nazi regime. Located adjacent to the site of the Martin-Gropius-Bau, an exhibition and museum. Once around the corner and you are at Potsdamer Platz.
Potsdamer Platz is the “new” Berlin. An exciting and historic location. Within a few years, was built on a fallow a modern, lively city center. You will experience modern architecture, entertainment, shopping and cosmopolitan flair.
